Design is the most powerful tool there is, from the development of life to the fabrication of a weapon. It shapes everything, including communication. Communication is the key to survival. Designers are tasked with upholding, maintaining, and advancing communication. But with great power comes great responsibility. Design must be used for the betterment of humanity, not to destroy.
A designer, much like the vastness of design, can be anything. A great designer is everything. A designer can create messaging that persuades and improves everyday experiences, a designer can be an engineer that envisions a bridge to improve a traffic pattern, an architect that creates low barrier housing for the homeless, a barber that shapes up a community every weekend, and so much more. We must utilize the skills and knowledge that we have to help others. Investing time into our communities is critical, and a cause worth more than profit. The cause is what makes a difference. What is the difference? It is something much greater than the designer.
8 points that make the difference:
True passion must be achieved, regardless of what you do, in order to find enjoyment and fulfillment in your work.
Strive to always improve your craft, and yourself. There are no peaks, just cliffs, but that doesn’t mean we stop.
Embrace your surroundings - people, places, things…
Fill yourself with as much knowledge you can, and most importantly, share that knowledge.
Honor techniques of the past in your craft, but always look forward and further expand your skills. We are always students.
Design for the future, the next generations are just as important, if not more.
Utilize your craft to guide, if not, be the voice of those in need., Communication is key!
